Researchers have explored the automation of MLE tasks using AI agents to handle these demands. Large Language Models, particularly those with strong coding and problem-solving abilities, have shown potential to enhance this process significantly. Their role in automating structured workflows is now being tested through rigorous benchmarks and environments tailored to emulate real-world MLE scenarios. A primary hurdle in automating machine learning engineering lies in the work’s inherently iterative and feedback-driven nature. Tasks such as hyperparameter tuning, model debugging, and data preprocessing cannot be resolved in one step; they require repeated modifications and evaluations. Traditional evaluation tools for AI models often rely on static datasets and do not allow for real-time error feedback or interactive problem-solving. This limitation prevents LLM agents from learning through trial and error, an essential component for mastering engineering tasks that evolve or require multiple attempts for success. Earlier tools to evaluate LLMs in engineering or coding tasks have mostly focused on individual subtasks or isolated challenges. These include tools like MLAgentBench and DSBench, which rely on narrow test cases sourced from Kaggle competitions or synthetic datasets. While they cover more than basic tasks, they do not enable agents to perform code execution, debugging, or results interpretation in a live setting. Other environments, like SWE-Gym, focus exclusively on software engineering and lack support for machine learning-specific workflows. These limitations have slowed the creation of versatile, high-performing MLE agents that can handle real-time project complexities. Researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology and Stanford University have introduced MLE-Dojo, a framework with an interactive environment that connects LLM agents with real-world machine learning tasks derived from over 200 Kaggle competitions. This framework supports tabular data analysis, computer vision, natural language processing, and time-series forecasting challenges. Research introduced MLE-Dojo to allow agents to write, execute, and revise code in a sandboxed, feedback-rich setting. The goal was to replicate the interactive cycles that human engineers follow, enabling structured learning for agents. The environment includes pre-installed dependencies, evaluation metrics, and supports supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning strategies. MLE-Dojo’s structure consists of modular components that support a wide range of MLE challenges. Each task runs within its own Docker container, isolating it for safety and reproducibility. Agents interact with the environment through a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, receiving observations, performing actions, and gaining rewards based on performance. The environment supports five primary action types: requesting task information, validating code, executing code, retrieving interaction history, and resetting the environment. It also provides a detailed observation space that includes datasets, execution results, and error messages. The agent receives structured feedback after every interaction, allowing for step-wise improvement. This modular setup helps maintain interoperability and simplifies adding new tasks to the system. The evaluation included eight frontier LLMs—Gemini-2.5-Pro, DeepSeek-r1, o3-mini, GPT-4o, GPT-4o-mini, Gemini-2.0-Pro, Gemini-2.0-Flash, and DeepSeek-v3—across four core machine learning domains. Gemini-2.5-Pro achieved the highest Elo rating of 1257, followed by DeepSeek-r1 at 1137 and o3-mini at 1108. Regarding HumanRank, Gemini-2.5-Pro led with 61.95%, indicating its superior performance over human benchmarks. Models like GPT-4o-mini executed code only 20% of the time, adopting conservative strategies, while o3-mini performed executions in over 90% of the cases. The average failure rate for Gemini-2.5-Pro remained the lowest across validation and execution phases, reinforcing its robustness. Among domains, computer vision posed the greatest challenge, with most models scoring under 60 in HumanRank. Reasoning models generally produced longer outputs and maintained stronger performance consistency across iterations. Streamlining the design of the portable stereos that were popular in the ‘80s, the €449GB-001 can function as a Bluetooth speaker and stream audio from a mobile device. But its most appealing feature is its ability to play and record to cassettes, potentially reviving the mixtape for another generation.The GB-001’s cassette deck mechanism features a user-adjustable motor with internal speed regulation for accurate playback. It also has a “noise reduction circuit” that emulates Dolby B so it can properly play tapes recorded using that older noise reduction system without any loss in sound quality. It looks like developer Arrowhead Game Studios isn’t content with just having released its latest major update for Helldivers 2. The studio is seemingly planning a bigger event where the fate of Super Earth might hang in the balance. A now-deleted post made by the official PlayStation social media account for the Czech Republic has indicated that May 20 will see the release of an event dubbed Heart of Democracy. “Super Earth is in danger,” posted the PlayStation account, as spotted by X user Iron_S1ghts. “All Helldivers must report to their Hellpods immediately. The battle for humanity itself begins! The big update ‘Heart of Democracy’ is coming out on May 20.” The post was accompanied by a warning image boasting of a “Galactic Emergency” along with the text “Calling all Helldivers.” While the post has been deleted and was likely posted early by accident, the supposed ‘Heart of Democracy’ update will be a big follow-up to the major update Helldivers 2 earlier this week. The update brought with it a host of new content, and revolves around the Illuminate invading Super Earth. Among other things, the update brought with it new enemies, like the Stingray and the Crescent Overseer, as well as new gameplay features. Core among these new features is the ability for players to now level up most of their primary weapons. By simply playing Helldivers 2 and completing objectives, players will be able to unlock customisation options for their primary weapons, including under-barrel attachments, magazine types and muzzle attachments. Rather than simply being cosmetic additions, these attachments add functionality to the player’s weapon of choice. Later this week, Arrowhead Game Studios will also be releasing the Masters of Ceremony Warbond. Included in the Warbond are a host of new weapons, like the R-2 Amendment rifle that also features a bayonet for quick melee attacks, a new melee weapon in the form of the CQC-2 Sabre, as well as the new G-142 Pyrotech Grenade, which can be used to set enemies on fire. Along with new weaponry, the Masters of Ceremony Warbond also includes a host of new armour pieces that give players the Reinforced Epaulettes perk that allows them to last longer in fights without having to worry about broken limbs. The upcoming Warbond comes two months after the previous one, and the studio was well aware that it hadn’t released a major update for Helldivers 2 in quite some time. Twenty-six years ago, a role-playing game based on the Harry Potter books was pitched and even received a demo. However, it never developed into a full game and only recently became known to the public through a museum tour.The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, had kept some footage of this project. Andrew Borman, the museum's director of digital preservation, told GamesRadar+ that Volition, the developer behind the iconic Saints Row franchise, wanted to recreate the world from the books in a video game. Remember, it was 1999, two years before Electronic Arts' Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out, so there was no visual reference at that time. The footage, though can't be shared, presented a game which is "pretty much just PS1-era Harry and Hagrid wandering around a small, unpopulated, unfinished town." The outlet described its environment and characters would resemble what a "Baldur's Gate-style top-down RPG" could provide.Although no videos here, we're lucky to see some of the screenshots. There is a loading page and a scene showing tiny Harry and Hagrid standing together:The demo, which allowed you to switch characters freely but offered few other actions, was developed over roughly a couple of weeks, according to Borman. He also revealed a detail when the game was pitched: "The story is that, when Volition and THQ pitched this game, at least some of the THQ executives came dressed in robes and had owls with them."Unfortunately, the idea and demo did not evolve into a game, and the project seemed to stop there without any known reason. The security update had broken dual-booting Windows 11 and Linux systems as GNU distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Puppy Linux, were all affected. A couple of days later, Microsoft provided a slightly lengthy workaround that involved tweaking around with policies and the Registry in order to fix the problem. The company also explained that the root of the issue was a buggy SBATimplementation in the Windows 11 August Patch Tuesday KB5041585. For those who may be wondering, SBAT helps block outdated and potentially vulnerable bootloaders by checking the Secure Boot DBX. The Secure Boot DBX is a database of blacklisted UEFI executables. Microsoft explained: After installing the August 2024 Windows security update,or the August 2024 preview update, you might face issues with booting Linux if you have enabled the dual-boot setup for Windows and Linux in your device. Resulting from this issue, your device might fail to boot Linux and show the error message “Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation.” The August 2024 Windows security and preview updates apply a Secure Boot Advanced Targetingsetting to devices that run Windows to block old, vulnerable boot managers. This SBAT update will not be applied to devices where dual booting is detected. On some devices, the dual-boot detection did not detect some customized methods of dual-booting and applied the SBAT value when it should not have been applied. When the lease on my car expired in 2017, I made the bold decision to turn it in without getting a new one. I was living in Seattle at the time, which has reliable bus routes and is small enough that nearly all my car rides were 20 minutes or less. It felt like the perfect setting to try relying on a combination of public transit, Uber, and my bike.The math was compelling. I would save a ton of money! There would be no upfront cost to buy the car, or ongoing expenses for gas, insurance, parking, and maintenance. For longer trips into the mountains for a hike, I could carpool with friends. Even if I had to rent a car occasionally, it would still be cheaper than owning one. I lasted less than six months, but eight years later, it might be more feasible given Uber's latest feature rollouts. The company has been working on reducing personal car ownership, Wendy Lee, Uber’s director of autonomous mobility and delivery products, told me at its 2025 global product event today. From automating jobs and unclear federal safety standards to potentially billions of wasted investment dollars, it's a precarious public experiment. Uber sends mixed messages about whether it’s "getting rid" of drivers. At this week’s event, a movie theater-sized screen proclaimed, "The future is autonomous," yet two spokespeople insisted to me that the idea is to increase the number of rides overall, for robots and humans alike. That's probably equal parts media training and reality, at least in the short term.“There are definitely things autonomous vehicles can’t do, like picking up at a private event or going long distances,” Lee says. “We’ll see what that looks like over time and how it develops.” On a sentimental note, the relationship between Uber riders and drivers has become a cultural institution that can provide some much-needed social interaction.
