The Mies Crown Hall Americas Prizeawarded the Thaden School in its fifth iteration. The 30-acre middle and high school campus in Bentonville, Arkansas, was a collective design effort by Marlon Blackwell Architects, EskewDumezRipple, and Andropogon Associates. The project pulls directly from the rural vernacular of the Ozark region. Thaden School beat out steep competition for the prize, including an aquarium in Mexico by Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO, a veterinary office in Argentina, an expansive park in Mexico, and an old pumphouse that was turned into apartments in Canada. The biennial MCHAP prize “acknowledges the best built works of architecture in the Americas.” It is awarded by the Illinois Institute of TechnologyCollege of Architecture and announced at a benefit held in Crown Hall, the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe–designed building on the IIT campus. Over 250 submissions were received for nomination to the 2025 Americas Prize. These were whittled down to the five finalists. As in past years, the jury visited each of the finalist projects and met with the designers and clients before settling on the Thaden School as the winning project. All of the new campus buildings are connected with the landscape.The 2025 MCHAP Americas Prize jury was headed by industry professionals, hailing from across the Americas. It was chaired by Maurice Cox, former Commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Cox was joined by Giovanna Borasi, director, Canadian Centre for Architecture; Gregg Pasquarelli, founding principal, SHoP Architects; Mauricio Rocha, founder, Taller | Mauricio Rocha, and the 2023 Americas Prize recipient; and Sofia von Ellrichshausen, founding partner of Chilean firm Pezo von Ellrichshausen. MCHAP Director Dirk Denison remarked about visiting the projects and complimented each of the five finalists. “Traveling together, I witnessed firsthand the incredible insights each jury member brought to these five standard-setting works,” he said. “All the finalists emerged organically from needs and demands of their immediate contexts, with ingenuity and a synergy of creativity between the client and designer—a synergy that is the hallmark of so many MCHAP finalists.” The cafeteria at Thaden School is one of the many spaces faced with a large window overlooking the grassy campus.Porches and screened passageways are among many architectural features that recall local vernacular.The jury praised Thaden School for its rootedness to site and context. Connection with the outdoors is a core part of the school’s curriculum; the design team tapped into this with gabled structures that recall barn buildings, through screened porches, and attention to the landscape and grounds. “The building’s character shapes a campus steeped in the rural culture of its place—the barn, the porch, and the long and low farm buildings are artfully assembled into a new academical village that powerfully interprets the pedagogical mission of ‘youth learning by doing,’” the jury collectively shared in a statement. The campus comprises a number of buildings, each with a unique program, connected to one another via series of pathways. Among these is the Home Building, where communal spaces were located: the dining hall, library, bookstore, and lounges. The buildings have low-lying profiles reminiscent of agricultural buildings as well as distinct, angular roof shapes as seen on the Bike Barn, the Arts and Administration Building, Performance Building, and others. Open-air passageways, garage-style doors, and large spans of glazing cement the connection with the rural surroundings. The low-lying buildings with gabled rooflines recall traditional barn architecture.“The collaborative effort of the design teams read through this powerful composition,” the jury commented. “Space is both contained and open-ended, inviting the public to enter into the center of student life. The threshold between outdoor and indoor is made of outward-facing porches, covered passageways, and outdoor rooms. This flexible composition of the campus encourages learning, recreation, farming, and civic gathering.” Several of the Thaden School buildings have been recognized in AN’s Best of Design awards program in the education category. In 2021 EskewDumezRipple received recognition for its work on the Home Building. Marlon Blackwell was similarly applauded in 2020 for its design for Bike Barn, and then again in 2024 for the Performance Building. Project architect Matthew Taylor received RIBA North West Project Architect of the Year for his role in delivering the scheme. In a statement, jury chair Dominic Wilkinson, principal lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, said the projects represented “a diverse example of the positive impact architecture can have on the lives of its users” and “demonstrate a positive future for architecture in the region”. Last year, Sarah Khan, 33, and her husband moved out and became digital nomads. So far, they've worked from Bali, Rome, Tuscany, Bangkok, Phuket, and Alicante. Bali has been her favorite place to work. The Mediterranean sparkles to my left as I type from a foldable desk on the terrace of a cozy home in a quiet coastal town in Spain. Rolling green hills stretch to my right, framing the space that will be home for the next three months, until we pack up and move again.It's been 12 months since my husband and I embarked on a nomadic life. We sold everything, ended our four-year apartment lease in Singapore, and boarded a one-way flight to Bali. Since then, we've worked from Bali, Rome, Tuscany, Bangkok, Phuket, and now the coast of Alicante in Spain.Friends and fellow travelers often ask, "Where's your favorite place to work?" I'm sometimes hesitant to answer because it's so subjective. Choosing a base as a nomad involves a different set of criteria than picking a vacation spot. For me, factors like community, longer-stay visas, reliable WiFi, easy access to nature, and a vibrant wellness scene are at the top of the checklist. Still, if I had to choose, the place that stands out— and one I'd happily return to — is Bali. Rent for the villa in Bali was a month, which included a pool, fast WiFi, and weekly cleaning. Perhaps I'm biased — with my Indonesian roots and years of vacationing there, I feel instantly at home.My husband and I chose Berawa as our base, a laidback neighbourhood just outside the buzz of Canggu. Located on Bali's southern coast, Canggu has transformed from a sleepy surf village into the island's hippest enclave, packed with trendy cafés and black sand beaches that draw yogis and surfers in equal measure.This was my first time staying in Berawa, and it turned out to be the ideal spot for an extended stay. You get proximity to the action of Canggu without actually living in the thick of it. My two-bedroom villa, tucked down a quiet lane off a main road, placed me less than 10 minutes from central Canggu.Bali's cost of living has crept up in recent years, but it still offered value for our longer stay. Our villa rent was a month, which included a pool, fast WiFi, and weekly cleaning — less than half of what I'd paid for my apartment in Singapore.A remote worker's dream setupBali was an easy place to get started on my nomad life. The island is exceptionally well-equipped for long stays: the WiFi is generally reliable, there are plenty of supermarkets and pharmacies available for daily necessities, and ride-hailing apps are affordable and convenient. After a year on the road, I've come to appreciate how rare this combination is.The island also boasts one of the best remote work ecosystems I've experienced, from coworking spaces like Outpost and BWork to laptop-friendly cafés. I rotated through a few favourites: the workspace upstairs at Woods, Zin Cafe, and Lighthouse, a coworking café with beautiful rice field views and its own on-site podcast and video studio. Gyms, yoga studios, and affordable massages are aplenty, especially around Berawa. And food options are great: from warungs serving fragrant local dishes to health-forward cafés and world-class restaurants.When work felt overwhelming and I needed a break, I could hop on a scooter and be at the beach in minutes. There were also many options for weekend escapes: We managed trips to the pristine Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan islands, a day trip to serene Sidemen, and explored the east coast's slower-paced beach towns like Amed and Candidasa.These experiences revealed a quieter, more soulful side of Bali — one I'd missed on past short trips. Traffic in Canggu can be chaotic, and the island's infrastructure is still catching up with its tourism growth. There's also a digital nomad community that, at times, can feel like a bubble and disconnected from authentic local life.But once you find your rhythm and favourite nooks, it's easy to tune out the noise and settle into Bali's slower, softer pace.I made it a point to skip the touristy spots, stay just outside the main areas, and design my life and routine around the kind of experience I wanted.A year into nomadic living, I've felt uprooted, disoriented, and occasionally exhausted. The island's 23 kilometers of shoreline, which includes 7.8 kilometers of white sand beaches, extend 4.5 kilometers into the Arabian Sea. Disney has made no secret of its changing strategy toward streaming in the last year or two. When Disney+ first debuted, the company allocated an enormous amount of resources to produce movies and shows exclusively for streaming. In the last year or two, they’ve openly discussed shifting a lot of those resources back to content that can debut in theaters first, and then move to streaming.That change is evident each month when Disney unveils the new batch of content coming to Disney+. Saudi Arabia unveiled a series of blockbuster AI partnerships with US chip makers, cloud infrastructure providers, and software developers this week, signaling its ambition to become a global AI hub. Leveraging its billion Public Investment Fundand strategic location, Saudi Arabia is forming partnerships to create sovereign AI infrastructure including advanced data centers and Arabic large language models. Google, Oracle, and Salesforce are deepening AI and cloud commitments in Saudi Arabia that will support Vision 2030, a 15-year program to diversify the country’s economy. Within that, the billion Project Transcendence aims to put the kingdom among the top 15 countries in AI by 2030. The deals announced during this week’s US-Saudi investment summit in Riyadh include a billion commitment from Saudi firm DataVolt for AI data centers and energy infrastructure in the US and an billion joint investment by Google, DataVolt, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD, and Uber in technologies across both nations, according to a White House fact sheet The Riyadh summit, attended by US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, drew tech luminaries including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su. AI factories Humain, an AI company backed by PIF, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, was at the center of much of the deal-making. Nvidia said it will supply Humain with hundreds of thousands of its most advanced GPUs over the next five years with which the company will build “AI factories” with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts. The first of those will contain 18,000 Grace Blackwell GB300 systems, it said. AMD announced a five-year, billion collaboration with Humain to deploy up to 500 megawatts of AI compute in Saudi Arabia and the US, aiming to deploy “multi-exaflop capacity by early 2026.” AWS, too, is expanding its data centers in Saudi Arabia to bolster Humain’s cloud infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has abundant oil and gas to power those data centers, and is growing its renewable energy resources with the goal of supplying 50% of the country’s power by 2030. “Commercial electricity rates, nearly 50% lower than in the US, offer potential cost savings for AI model training, though high local hosting costs due to land, talent, and infrastructure limit total savings,” said Eric Samuel, Associate Director at IDC. Located near Middle Eastern population centers and fiber optic cables to Asia, these data centers will offer enterprises low-latency cloud computing for real-time AI applications. Late is great There’s an advantage to being a relative latecomer to the technology industry, said Eric Samuel, associate director, research at IDC. “Saudi Arabia’s greenfield tech landscape offers a unique opportunity for rapid, ground-up AI integration, unburdened by legacy systems,” he said. Arun Chandrasekaran, distinguished VP analyst at Gartner, said the investments signify Saudi Arabia’s “ambition to become a central hub for AI development, rivaling established tech centers in the US and China.” Other analysts weighed in on Saudi Arabia’s goals. Neil Shah, vice president research at Counterpoint Research, said the push could make it the next “oil hub” for AI, serving both local and global needs, while Amandeep Singh, practice director at QKS Group, said, “This isn’t just about money. It’s a strategic play to become a long-term AI power and a neutral meeting point for global AI.” Despite the vast political and financial resources in play, though, the analysts forecast challenges ahead when it comes to attracting top talent, reducing reliance on Western chips, and building data governance trust. While Saudi Arabia is a lucrative new market for companies such as Nvidia and AWS, “They must navigate questions of control and compliance,” said QKS Group’s Singh. Aligning with Saudi Arabia’s push for digital sovereignty requires a delicate balance between Western regulations, export restrictions, and the Kingdom’s drive for independence. Political risks IDC’s Samuel noted that initiatives like Humain can foster trust and alignment with national priorities, but added, “With the right oversight and governance, political risks can be managed and long-term AI development secured.” Building a real AI power bloc in the Middle East is still a tough climb, the analysts said. “Saudi Arabia’s ambition needs more than just cash to turn into real influence in the region,” said Singh. “They need shared tech foundations, common AI standards across countries, and everyone to agree on policies — and we’re not quite there yet.” Making strong partnerships with other companies and countries will be key for Saudi Arabia to turn its big investments into lasting global influence, the analysts said, making sure its AI plans become more than just a showpiece. In two recent blogs, members of my team introduced Memory Profiler 1.0.0 and shared five key workflows to diagnose and examine memory-related issues in your game.Soon, we will be releasing Memory Profiler 1.1, which includes updated labels and descriptions to explain how memory works and how application memory footprint is calculated.Since memory footprint continues to be a hot topic in our conversations with developers, I’m here to answer your frequently asked questions – specifically, to cover these three topics:What resident memory isHow application memory footprint is calculatedHow to analyze memory footprintLet’s drill into memory allocation in Unity. When the engine allocates memory, it first reserves multiple memory pages in the virtual address space that can fit the requested allocation. Pages are the smallest units of memory management. Virtual address space and physical storage are each organized into pages, and the page size depends on the platform used. For example, on x86 computers a page size is 4 KB.After the engine has reserved enough pages, it asks the operating systemto “commit” physical storage to memory. This is why allocated memory is often referred to as “committed.” Next, the OS registers that the pages now have physical storage assigned and they can be accessed. Your application-reported “total committed memory” will then increase. However, the physical memory footprint of your application stays the same.The footprint stays the same because, even though you’ve committed your region to physical storage, most OSs are lazy and thrifty, so there’s no assignment of a specific physical storage location. As an example, let’s say you decide to write something in the committed region. There is not yet any physical memory underneath the region, so accessing it will incur a page fault. In response, the OS’s memory manager will allocate a previously available physical page in order to complete your operation. Because all operations are performed with page-size granularity, unaccessed pages of the region will remain empty and without physical memory assigned. Similarly, your application’s resident memory size will increase by the total size of all physical memory pages allocated to complete your operation.If a page has not been accessed for a while or demand for physical memory is high, an OS might offload some pages from your allocated region either to compressed memory or a page swap file, depending on what is supported on your platform.In this case, your application’s reported allocated memory will stay the same but resident memory size will decrease.As you might have already realized, if you only look at allocated memory you may be misled by which allocation consumes your physical memory, which can trick you into optimizing something that isn’t a problem. Not only does this waste your valuable time, you don’t see any difference in your application performance and stability.Overall, your application memory state can be described by this diagram:In summary, here’s how the memory footprint is calculated:Physical memory footprint = Application resident memory + Application compressed memory pagesIn Memory Profiler 1.1, the Summary, Unity Objects, and All Of Memory views will not only show Allocated memory size but also provide information about Resident memory. However, this information will only be shown if the Memory Profiler snapshot is made with Unity 2023.1 or newer. With older snapshots, you’ll still see updated UI and breakdown views, but without information on Resident memory.TheSummary view provides a general overview and an essential metric: Total Resident on Device. If your application needs to run on a platform with limited memory, Total Resident on Device is critical for reviewing low memory warnings and out-of-memory evictions. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t go over 70% of the total physical memory available on a device.For detailed analysis, you can use Unity Objects andAll of Memory views. You’ll need to select Resident on Device or Allocated and Resident on Device from the dropdown menu and sort by Resident size to see objects that contribute most to the total physical memory used.When analyzing resident memory usage, remember:Managed memory will be dominantly resident. Mono Heap and Boehm Garbage Collector regularly access objects and make them resident.Graphics memoryis shown as estimated. On most platforms, we don’t have access to information on the exact whereabouts of the graphics resources, so we estimate size based on available information like width, height, depth, pixel format, and so on. This also means we don’t have information about graphics resources’ residency status. For usability reasons, all graphics objects are shown only in the Allocated view mode.Untracked is all memory reported by the OS as allocated by the application, but which lacks solid information on the source of the allocation. It could be native plugins, OS libraries, thread stacks, etc. On some platforms, we provide additional insights into who might have allocated that memory in the group breakdown.When analyzing Native memory, which contains all Unity non-managed allocations used by objects, you’ll see the Reserved memory item. This is memory allocated by Unity Memory Manager but not used by any Unity object during capture. Here’s some helpful information:Reserved memory can be resident, which means that there might have been an object that was recently deleted.You can access additional information about Reserved breakdown by going to the Memory Profiler settings and enabling the “Show reserved memory breakdown” checkbox. By default, this is disabled, as Reserved breakdown doesn’t always contain enough actionable information and requires a deep understanding of how Unity Memory Manager works.You can learn more about Unity Memory Manager and allocation strategies in the allocators setup documentation.On some platforms, we show additional platform-specific groups if they’re of significant size, like Android Runtime on Android. Here are some notes on Android Runtime:On some versions, Android Runtime tends to preallocate a significant amount of memory but never use it. In that case, allocated memory doesn’t add to the application memory footprint and only the resident part of it needs to be considered.If the Android Runtime resident part is taking up a significant amount of the application memory footprint, use the Android Studio profiler to analyze allocations done in Java.Although Android doesn’t have a page file or memory compression by default, the Linux kernel allows applications to overcommit and allocate more memory than is physically available.When capturing, make sure you understand the device you’re using. Some vendors supply the Android Linux kernel with memory compressionor vendor-custom page swap file tools.We hope this overview of what to expect in Memory Profiler 1.1and exploration of various topics around memory footprint have been helpful.My team and I plan to continue improving the Memory Profiler to provide more precise and targeted information, as well as warn you about potential out-of-memory situations and how close they might be. An AI tool aims to wade through mountains of government feedback and understand what the public is trying to say.UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said: “No one should be wasting time on something AI can do quicker and better, let alone wasting millions of taxpayer pounds on outsourcing such work to contractors.This digital assistant, aptly named ‘Consult’, just aced its first big test with the Scottish Government.The Scottish Gov threw Consult in at the deep end, asking it to make sense of public opinion on regulating non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as lip fillers and laser hair removal. Consult came back with findings almost identical to what human officials had pieced together.Now, the plan is to roll this tech out across various government departments. The current way of doing things is expensive and slow. Millions of pounds often go to outside contractors just to analyse what the public thinks.Consult is part of a bigger push to build a leaner, more responsive UK government—one that can deliver on its ‘Plan for Change’ without breaking the bank or taking an age to do it.So, how did it fare in Scotland? Consult chewed through responses from over 2,000 people. Using generative AI, it picked out the main themes and concerns bubbling up from the feedback across six key questions.Of course, Consult wasn’t left completely to its own devices. Experts in the Scottish Government double-checked and fine-tuned these initial themes. Then, the AI got back to work to sort individual responses into these categories. Officials ended up with more precious time to consider what people were saying and what it meant for policy.Because this was Consult’s first live outing, the Scottish Government went through every single response by hand too—just to be sure. Figuring out exactly what someone means in a written comment and then deciding which ‘theme’ it fits under can be a bit subjective. Even humans don’t always agree.When the government compared Consult’s handiwork to human analysis, the AI was right most of the time. Where there were differences, they were so minor they didn’t change the overall picture of what mattered most to people.Consult is part of a bigger AI toolkit called ‘Humphrey’—a suite of digital helpers designed to free up civil servants from admin and cut down on those contractor bills. It’s all part of a grander vision to use technology to sharpen up public services, aiming to find £45 billion in productivity savings. The goal is a more nimble government that is better at delivering that ‘Plan for Change’ we keep hearing about.“After demonstrating such promising results, Humphrey will help us cut the costs of governing and make it easier to collect and comprehensively review what experts and the public are telling us on a range of crucial issues,” added Kyle.“The Scottish Government has taken a bold first step. Very soon, I’ll be using Consult, within Humphrey, in my own department and others in Whitehall will be using it too – speeding up our work to deliver the Plan for Change.”Over in Scotland, Public Health Minister Jenni Minto said: “Using the tool was very beneficial in helping the Scottish Government understand more quickly what people wanted us to hear and our respondents’ range of views.“Using this tool has allowed the Scottish Government to move more quickly to a focus on the policy questions and dive into the detail of the evidence we’ve been presented with, while remaining confident that we have heard the strong views expressed by respondents.”Of course, like many AI deployments in government, it’s still early days, and Consult is officially still in the trial phase. More number-crunching and testing are on the cards to make sure it’s working just as it should before any big decisions about a full rollout are made.But the potential here is huge. The government runs about 500 consultations every year. If Consult lives up to its promise, it could save officials a staggering 75,000 days of analysis annually.And what did the civil servants who first worked with Consult think? They were reportedly “pleasantly surprised,” finding the AI’s initial analysis a “useful starting point.” Others raved that it “saveda heck of a lot of time” and let them “get to the analysis and draw out what’s needed next” much faster.Interestingly, they also felt Consult brought a new level of fairness to the table. As one official put it, its use “takes away the bias and makes it more consistent,” preventing individual analysts from, perhaps unconsciously, letting their “own preconceived ideas” colour the findings.Some consultations receive tens, even hundreds of thousands of responses. Given how well Consult has performed in these early tests, it won’t be long before it’s used on these massive consultations.It’s worth noting that humans aren’t being kicked out of the loop. Consult has been built to keep the experts involved every step of the way. Officials will always review the themes the AI suggests and how it sorts the responses. They’ll have an interactive dashboard to play with, letting them filter and search for specific insights. It’s about AI doing the heavy lifting, so the humans can do the smart thinking.This move towards AI in government isn’t happening in a vacuum, and experts are watching closely.Stuart Harvey, CEO of Datactics, commented: “Using AI to speed up public consultations is a great example of how technology can improve efficiency and save money. But AI is only as good as the data behind it. For tools like this to work well and fairly, government departments need to make sure their data is accurate, up-to-date, and properly managed.“People need to trust the decisions made with AI. That means making sure the process is clear, well-governed, and ethical. If the data is messy or poorly handled, it can lead to biased or unreliable outcomes.“As the government expands its use of AI in public services, it’s vital to invest in strong data practices. That includes building clear and consistent data systems, making data accessible for review, and keeping humans involved in key decisions—especially when it comes to hearing from the public.”This sentiment is echoed by academics. Professor Michael Rovatsos from the University of Edinburgh, for instance, acknowledges the benefits but also wisely cautions about the risks of AI biases and even the potential for these tools to be manipulated. He’s calling for tough safeguards and ongoing investment to make sure any AI tool used by the government remains reliable and fair.Stuart Munton, Chief for Group Operations at AND Digital, added: “The government’s use of AI to speed up public consultations is a welcome step toward smarter, more efficient public services. However, as AI adoption grows, we must ensure that people – not just technology – are at the heart of this transformation.”“Tools like this will only reach their full potential if we invest in equipping public sector teams with the right skills and training. Empowering diverse talent to work with AI will not only improve how these tools perform but also ensure that innovation is inclusive to real-world needs.”If done right, with these expert caveats in mind, AI tools like Consult have the potential to improve how governments listen, learn, and make policy based on public opinion. The clients previously lived in a large house and wanted to build a smaller home that felt right for two people. Entirely clad in cork, Casa CG merges with its surroundings while being thermally efficient and making the most of a modest budget.this picture!this picture!this picture!this picture!We designed a compact house with a rectangular floor plan and an asymmetrical roof. This allowed us to gain square meters for a multi-purpose space at a lower cost by increasing the height of only one-half of the house to accommodate a mezzanine. On the ground floor, the kitchen, living, and dining areas are grouped along an open space with windows on three sides. A bedroom and a bathroom are located on a more intimate scale below the mezzanine.this picture!Thin wooden partitions on the interior soften the concrete structure and maximize the usable space.
