Earlier this month, NetherRealm Studios released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, a digital-only package that includes the base game, the Khaos Reigns DLC expansion, and two rounds of fighter packs. Players took it as a sign that MK1 wouldn't be getting any more updates, and bombarded NetherRealm for continued DLC support. Now, NetherRealm has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1's reign is coming to a close."We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1," noted the game's official account on X. Black Ops 6 season 4 is about Grief. No, not the all too real human emotion (this is still Call of Duty after all); the new game mode! In addition to Grief — a competitive survival mode for Zombies that hasn’t been playable since Black Ops 2 — season 4 of Black Ops 6 will also introduce its usual seasonal slew of new maps, modes, and weapons. The season will also feature a collaboration with Ballerina, the forthcoming John Wick tie-in film, both through a limited time-event and shop bundle. In many companies, data, findings, and insights are all used interchangeably. Slack conversations circle around convincing data points, statistically significant findings, reliable insights, and emerging trends. Unsurprisingly, conversations often mistake sporadic observations for consistent patterns. But how impactful is the weight that each of them carries? And how do we turn raw data into meaningful insights to make better decisions? Well, let’s find out. Why It All Matters At first, it may seem that the differences are very nuanced and merely technical. But when we review inputs and communicate the outcomes of our UX work, we need to be careful not to conflate terminology — to avoid wrong assumptions, wrong conclusions, and early dismissals. When strong recommendations and bold statements emerge in a big meeting, inevitably, there will be people questioning the decision-making process. More often than not, they will be the loudest voices in the room, often with their own agenda and priorities that they are trying to protect. As UX designers, we need to be prepared for it. The last thing we want is to have a weak line of thinking, easily dismantled under the premise of “weak research”, “unreliable findings”, “poor choice of users” — and hence dismissed straight away. Data ≠ Findings ≠ Insights People with different roles — analysts, data scientists, researchers, strategists — often rely on fine distinctions to make their decisions. The general difference is easy to put together: Data is raw observations (logs, notes, survey answers) (what was recorded). Findings describe emerging patterns in data but aren’t actionable (what happened). Insights are business opportunities (what happened + why + so what). Hindsights are reflections of past actions and outcomes (what we learned in previous work). Foresights are informed projections, insights with extrapolation (what could happen next). Here’s what it then looks like in real life: Data ↓ Six users were looking for ”Money transfer” in “Payments”, and 4 users discovered the feature in their personal dashboard. Finding ↓ 60% of users struggled to find the “Money transfer” feature on a dashboard, often confusing it with the “Payments” section. Insight ↓ Navigation doesn’t match users’ mental models for money transfers, causing confusion and delays. We recommend renaming sections or reorganizing the dashboard to prioritize “Transfer Money”. It could make task completion more intuitive and efficient. Hindsight ↓ After renaming the section to “Transfer Money” and moving it to the main dashboard, task success increased by 12%. User confusion dropped in follow-up tests. It proved to be an effective solution. Foresight ↓ As our financial products become more complex, users will expect simpler task-oriented navigation (e.g., “Send Money”, “Pay Bills“) instead of categories like “Payments”. We should evolve the dashboard towards action-driven IA to meet user expectations. Only insights create understanding and drive strategy. Foresights shape strategy, too, but are always shaped by bets and assumptions. So, unsurprisingly, stakeholders are interested in insights, not findings. They rarely need to dive into raw data points. But often, they do want to make sure that findings are reliable. That’s when, eventually, the big question about statistical significance comes along. And that’s when ideas and recommendations often get dismissed without a chance to be explored or explained. But Is It Statistically Significant? Now, for UX designers, that’s an incredibly difficult question to answer. As Nikki Anderson pointed out, statistical significance was never designed for qualitative research. And with UX work, we’re not trying to publish academic research or prove universal truths. What we are trying to do is reach theoretical saturation, the point where additional research doesn’t give us new insights. Research isn’t about proving something is true. It’s about preventing costly mistakes before they happen. Here are some useful talking points to handle the question: Five users per segment often surface major issues, and 10–15 users per segment usually reach saturation. If we’re still getting new insights after that, our scope is too broad. “If five people hit the same pothole and wreck their car, how many more do you need before fixing the road?” “If three enterprise customers say onboarding is confusing, that’s a churn risk.” “If two usability tests expose a checkout issue, that’s abandoned revenue.” “If one customer interview reveals a security concern, that’s a crisis waiting to happen.” “How many user complaints exactly do we need to take this seriously?” “How much revenue exactly are we willing to lose before fixing this issue?” And: it might not be necessary to focus on the number of participants, but instead, argue about users consistently struggling with a feature, mismatch of expectations, and a clear pattern emerging around a particular pain point. How To Turn Findings Into Insights Once we notice patterns emerging, we need to turn them into actionable recommendations. Surprisingly, this isn’t always easy — we need to avoid easy guesses and assumptions as far as possible, as they will invite wrong conclusions. To do that, you can rely on a very simple but effective framework to turn findings into insights: What Happened + Why + So What: “What happened” covers observed behavior and patterns. “Why” includes beliefs, expectations, or triggers. “So What” addresses impact, risk, and business opportunity. To better assess the “so what” part, we should pay close attention to the impact of what we have noticed on desired business outcomes. It can be anything from high-impact blockers and confusion to hesitation and inaction. Stop Sharing Findings — Deliver Insights When presenting the outcomes of your UX work, focus on actionable recommendations and business opportunities rather than patterns that emerged during testing. To me, it’s all about telling a good damn story. Memorable, impactful, feasible, and convincing. Paint the picture of what the future could look like and the difference it would produce. Tucked into a residential lot in Victoria, Australia, Palm House demonstrates how an outdated home can be sensitively reimagined to meet the evolving needs of contemporary family life – without erasing its history. Designed by Leeton Pointon Architects + Interiors, the project breathes new life into a post-war 1940s suburban dwelling that had grown tired, dark, and disconnected from the outdoors. At the heart of the project is a core belief in working with what exists. Rather than resorting to complete demolition, the architects chose to retain the majority of the original structure. This choice not only reduced environmental impact but also allowed the design team to allocate resources strategically – enhancing key functional spaces like the kitchen, pantry, laundry, and communal living zones. By doing so, the new intervention becomes a focused, high-quality addition rather than a sprawling overhaul. The new extension, aptly described as a “garden room,” serves as the heart of the home. Set within a carefully curated landscape, the addition embraces its environment through expansive glazing, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior. As one moves through the original portion of the house, a framed view through an arched portal gradually reveals the light-filled pavilion and the lush garden beyond. This newly established relationship with the outdoors marks a shift from the house’s original inward-facing character. Natural light, previously absent, now floods the living areas. Garden views extend in all directions, and ventilation flows with ease – qualities that significantly enhance the comfort, wellness, and joy of daily life. Despite the complex spatial language of Palm House, its material palette remains refreshingly simple. Concrete, glass, and wood work in harmony to create a contemporary yet calming environment. These materials were chosen for their enduring qualities, while adding a modern layer to the original historic home. Internally, the layout allows for easy movement throughout while creating nuanced distinctions between spaces. Generous open-plan areas encourage connection, along with gentle curves and changes in ceiling height that form more intimate nooks for retreat. The modern furnishings curated by Karyne Murphy Studio lean toward soft textures, natural hues, and minimalist compositions, reinforcing the calm and contemplative atmosphere throughout. A defining element of the extension is its sculptural concrete roof. Its sweeping curves create a rhythm and softness not typically associated with the material. This roof not only defines the architectural character but also serves practical functions: shielding the home from excessive summer heat, providing thermal mass for energy efficiency, and framing views both upward and outward. The expressive oculus skylights punctuating the roofline act as dramatic light sources. They direct shifting patterns of sunlight throughout the day, animating the interior with shadows and reflections. Sustainability is a core principle in Palm House’s design and addition. By reusing the existing building structure and focusing new construction on essential areas, the architects dramatically reduced material waste and reduced costs. Passive design strategies – including orientation, shading, thermal mass, and natural ventilation – were integrated from the outset. Solar panels are concealed within the roofline, water tanks are hidden yet accessible, and the landscaping supports food production and biodiversity without compromising aesthetics. The wait is over, people: WhatsApp is officially, finally, available on iPad. WhatsApp started as an iPhone app way back in 2009. Seventeenyears later, the app is still available on iPhone, as well as Android, Mac, and PC. But one platform the app has never been available for is the iPad. Despite being the most popular mobile messaging app in the world—roughly a quarter of the global population uses it—Meta never cared to bring WhatsApp to the most popular tablet in the world.That changes today. On Tuesday, May 27, Meta included an iPad app with the latest WhatsApp update (version 25.16.81). It comes just one day after the company teased the app on X: The official WhatsApp account reposted an X user who said there should be an iPad version of the app. WhatsApp didn't say anything other than posting the side-eye emoji, heavily implying the app was on its way. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. From the App Store listing, it appears to be the usual WhatsApp experience you'd expect from, well, WhatsApp—only, optimized for the iPad's larger display. When viewing your chats, you can see all conversations in a column on the left, with the active chat featured prominently in a larger column on the right. Your statuses will take up the full screen, and video calls will let you fit many callers on one screen. Instagram may be getting an iPad app tooWhatsApp isn't the only Meta app that needed an iPad version. Instagram infamously has remained iPad free for years, forcing users to download the iPhone version or rely on the web app to access Instagram on their tablets. Rumor has it, however, the company is working on a native iPad app for Instagram, too, though nothing is set in stone. It would be a big improvement for Instagram users who often browse on their iPads, but we'll have to wait and see if the company actually pulls the trigger.

The Browser Company has stopped active development of the popular Arc web browser, according to a blog post from CEO Josh Miller. There will still be updates to fix security issues and the like, but there will likely be no new features added to the product. Miller says that "for most people, Arc was simply too different, with too many new things to learn, for too little reward." He also said that the browser "lacked cohesion, in both its core features and core value."   Instead, the company has shifted focus to a new product called Dia, which is an AI-powered browser of some kind. Dia was first announced at the tail-end of last year and has been described as "an entirely new environment — built on top of a web browser." Demos have shown Dia helping users write the next sentence in a paragraph, all while retrieving facts about a subject from the wider internet. It was also shown automatically grabbing Amazon links to insert in an email from a simple description and completing relatively complex actions based on user prompts. Some of this feels like an extension of what the company has already been doing with the mobile version of the Arc browser.  Dia is currently being tested via an alpha build, but will open up to current Arc members in the near future. Miller says that the company has "approached Dia as an opportunity to fix what we got wrong with Arc." The Browser Company has considered selling or open-sourcing Arc, but won't be doing anything so drastic at this moment. An open-source version of the browser would make a lot of current users happy, but Miller says it'll be a challenge because it's built on top of an internal SDK which is also the core component of Dia. Open-sourcing one would basically open-source the other.
