  • Jony Ive and OpenAI plan ‘bicycles’ for 21st-century minds

In a move that casts a shadow across Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developer’s Conference, OpenAI has announced that it will purchase io, the AI startup founded by acclaimed former Apple designer Sir Jony Ive, who helped create the iMac, iPod, and iPhone.

The deal sees Ive’s hand-picked io team of talented Apple alumni merge with OpenAI. Ive himself stays out the b deal. He will retain independence at his company LoveFrom but will be taking on “deep design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI and io.”

Toward the human interface for AI

The intention is to design the user interfaces for AI-enabled machines that will define the future of tech.“This is an extraordinary moment,” declares the OpenAI press release announcing the deal. “Computers are now seeing, thinking and understanding. Despite this unprecedented capability, our experience remains shaped by traditional products and interfaces.”

While OpenAI doesn’t quite go so far as to say the move means AI is about to enter its iPhone moment, the company quite clearly believes this to be the case. Ive famously left Apple in 2019, working as an advisor for a while until he ceased working for the company completely, just before beginning io.

“I have a growing sense that everything I have learned over the last 30 years has led me to this moment,” said Ive.

    Apple echoes are everywhere

For a veteran Apple watcher, there’s a lot of echoes within the announcement. Even the press release has an Apple-like resonance, headed up by a tasteful picture of Ive with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Longtime Apple watchers really should not ignore these echoes.

Ive and his hand-picked team of historically important former Apple design talent, including Evans Hankey and Tang Tan, will take over design and creative at OpenAI to build AI-enabled devices people can use to make things. If that sounds familiar, think back to Apple founder Steve Jobs and his description of computers as “bicycles for the mind.” That sounds like what OpenAI now intends to make.

It isn’t just an intimation of Apple, it’s all about muscling into similar innovation space.

“I hope we can bring some of the delight, wonder and creative spirit that I first felt using an Apple Computer 30 years ago,” said Sam Altman. You can watch a short video featuring Altman and Ive discussing their plans here.

    A change in the balance

Of course, Apple has its own relationship with OpenAI, but the appointment of its acclaimed former designer to the company will change the balance of power — particularly as Apple itself is struggling with artificial intelligence.

To put the deal into some kind of context, analyst firm Gartner expects worldwide genAI spending to reach a total of billion in 2025, an increase of 76.4% from 2024. This spend includes a huge increase in sales of AI devices, particularly servers and smartphones.

“By 2026, generative design AI will automate 60% of the design effort for new websites and mobile apps,” writes Gartner Market Databook, which anticipates that by 2026, over 100 million humans will “engage robo-colleaguesto contribute to enterprise work.”

    An analyst perspective

So, what does Gartner think the deal means for OpenAI, Apple, and the future of tech?

I spoke with Chirag Dekate, Gartner VP and analyst for quantum technologies, AI infrastructures, and supercomputing. He thinks the arrangement will put OpenAI in competition with all the big hardware players in tech, and, perhaps more importantly, reflects an evolutionary step in AI, one that ends up with far more intelligent devices that feel natural to use. I reproduce his analysis below, as it’s far too wide in scope to paraphrase.

What does this deal mean for OpenAI?

Dekate: “This marks a next phase of evolution for OpenAI. Market trends as indicated by Google at their I/O event yesterday, Meta, and other innovators, are clear: Leadership in AI is not just about building powerful models anymore, it’s about shaping the entire experience around AI. Bringing Jony Ive on board to design AI-native hardware shows that like Google, Meta, and peers, OpenAI is serious about creating devices where the tech and the design work hand in hand.

“Until now, Open AI was reliant on its peers and ecosystems in the cloud to diffuse AI into products and experiences. With this acquisition, Open AI, rather than relying on others to bring its models to life, is stepping into the driver’s seat. OpenAI wants to craft the physical touchpoints of AI themselves, devices that feel intuitive and indispensable in everyday experiences.

“This acquisition is also a strategic move. With this kind of vertical integration, OpenAI is positioning itself to go head-to-head with the likes of Google, Meta, and Tesla, not just on software, but on how we experience AI in the real world.”

How will this impact Apple and its user base?

Dekate: “This is an interesting moment for Apple. With Ive, the company’s longtime design visionary, helping build the next generation of AI devices outside of Apple, it could introduce new ways for people to interact with technology, possibly in ways that challenge Apple’s current product thinking. Today’s iPhone experience — and, more broadly speaking, the Apple experience — leaves a lot to be desired. It is expensive, clunky, and feels dated, especially around AI.

“Here the lack of AI nativity within Apple is clear and experienceable for most Apple users. Android experiences from Samsung, and Google Pixel offer more AI native infusion in a way Apple doesn’t. For Apple users, it means more options on the horizon. If OpenAI and Ive succeed, we could see the emergence of new layers of abstraction-designed AI devices that rival Apple’s in terms of experience and aesthetics but are more innovative and ready for AI-native era in a way Apple’s current products aren’t.

“That said, Apple isn’t standing still. They’re likely to ramp up their own AI integration, maybe even explore new device categories to stay ahead. It’s not a threat to Apple’s ecosystem yet, but it is a reminder that in an AI-native era, yesterday’s leaders may not be always have an advantage if they do not have AI-native cores.”

What’s the bigger picture for the industry?

Dekate: “This collaboration is part of a broader shift: AI is moving from digital and into the physical world. We’re seeing it with Google’s robotics and XR efforts, Meta’s smart glasses, Tesla’s Optimus, and Nvidia’s AI platforms. OpenAI’s potential move into devices and physical AI is an accelerant.

“The future isn’t just smarter software; it’s intelligent devices that feel natural to use. The industry is heading toward AI-first hardware, designed from the ground up for seamless, human-like interaction. And in that world, design matters more than ever.

“As AI becomes part of how we live and work, the companies that can make that experience intuitive, elegant, and even joyful, like Ive has done in his past, will lead the way.”

Jony Ive and OpenAI plan ‘bicycles’ for 21st-century minds
In a move that casts a shadow across Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developer’s Conference, OpenAI has announced that it will purchase io, the AI startup founded by acclaimed former Apple designer Sir Jony Ive, who helped create the iMac, iPod, and iPhone.  The deal sees Ive’s hand-picked io team of talented Apple alumni merge with OpenAI. Ive himself stays out the $6.5b deal. He will retain independence at his company LoveFrom but will be taking on “deep design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI and io.” Toward the human interface for AI The intention is to design the user interfaces for AI-enabled machines that will define the future of tech. (I hate to say “I told you so.“) “This is an extraordinary moment,” declares the OpenAI press release announcing the deal. “Computers are now seeing, thinking and understanding. Despite this unprecedented capability, our experience remains shaped by traditional products and interfaces.” While OpenAI doesn’t quite go so far as to say the move means AI is about to enter its iPhone moment, the company quite clearly believes this to be the case. Ive famously left Apple in 2019, working as an advisor for a while until he ceased working for the company completely, just before beginning io. “I have a growing sense that everything I have learned over the last 30 years has led me to this moment,” said Ive. Apple echoes are everywhere For a veteran Apple watcher, there’s a lot of echoes within the announcement. A change in the balance Of course, Apple has its own relationship with OpenAI, but the appointment of its acclaimed former designer to the company will change the balance of power — particularly as Apple itself is struggling with artificial intelligence. To put the deal into some kind of context, analyst firm Gartner expects worldwide genAI spending to reach a total of $644 billion in 2025, an increase of 76.4% from 2024. This spend includes a huge increase in sales of AI devices, particularly servers and smartphones.  “By 2026, generative design AI will automate 60% of the design effort for new websites and mobile apps,” writes Gartner Market Databook, which anticipates that by 2026, over 100 million humans will “engage robo-colleagues (synthetic virtual colleagues) to contribute to enterprise work.” An analyst perspective So, what does Gartner think the deal means for OpenAI, Apple, and the future of tech? With this kind of vertical integration, OpenAI is positioning itself to go head-to-head with the likes of Google, Meta, and Tesla, not just on software, but on how we experience AI in the real world.” How will this impact Apple and its user base? It’s not a threat to Apple’s ecosystem yet, but it is a reminder that in an AI-native era, yesterday’s leaders may not be always have an advantage if they do not have AI-native cores.” What’s the bigger picture for the industry? Dekate: “This collaboration is part of a broader shift: AI is moving from digital and into the physical world. We’re seeing it with Google’s robotics and XR efforts, Meta’s smart glasses, Tesla’s Optimus, and Nvidia’s AI platforms. Here's the summary of latest eXtas1s' direct about verified rumors and leaks from his sources:

    Steam/Epic Integration into Microsoft Store
A new app called "Steam DF Beta" has appeared in the Windows Microsoft Store, allowing users to install Steam directly from the official store.
The Epic Games Store is already integrated in the same way.
This doesn't mean current Xbox consoleswill natively run Steam, but that Windowswill offer an easier download/install experience.

    Future "Console-Like" Shell on Windows

Microsoft is developing a compatibility layer or "shell" to give Windows a console-like interface, suitable for both PC gaming and next‑gen Xbox systems.Xbox Emulation on PC
An Xbox emulator for Windowsis in development, allowing users to play their Xbox library on PC by emulating the console rather than running native PC ports of the games.
Saves and achievements will remain separate between Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox and will not sync automatically.

    Backward Compatibility and "Pass‑Through" Titles

There are no plans to add new backward‑compatible games beyond what's already available, but the emulator work will let the entire Xbox library run on PC.Evolution of Game Pass
Game Passwill remain a strategic cornerstone and will not be discontinued.
New tiers are coming: cloud‑only, ad‑supported, PC‑only, Ultimate, etc.
A price restructuring is imminent, likely raising fees—especially for the PC tier.

    Handling Rumors and Q&A
The creator explains their approach: freely discuss rumorsbut clearly flag when something isn't confirmed 100%.
They answer questions on topics such as:
Transferring Xbox libraries to new consolesWhether online emulation will require subscriptionsThird‑party titles and new COD at the next showcaseBuying on Steam vs. Microsoft StoreApparently what I suspected 1 year ago is actually coming true.
    What do you think?

    Jez Corden mostly corroborated this

    Interesting strategy.

This is just a PC in a box.

In the interest of balance all developers need to have controller only lobbies in their multiplayer games.

I highly doubt that. If everyone would just use steam on XBOX Next MS would have to pay 20 to 30% of every transaction made to Valve.

I don't believe the emulation part would have "the entire Xbox library" running on PC. It's not doable.

I mean if true, who cares? I can tell you who doesn't, it's Microsoft.

Unless Steam titles will be selective, meaning you can buy THPS on Steam or MS store, or EGS.

But if it's full Steamahead with just being a PC, then fuck it, let them have it a PC.

This is the common sense endpoint for Microsoft's gaming venture

Just like Nintendo merged handheld and console to make the switch. Microsoft merging the best parts of Pc and console while also allowing your library to live forever on pc is the best outcome for everyone

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I feel like the end result here is something that is too far away from a console to appeal to the console guys, and too far away from a PC to appeal to the PC guys. Just occupying this awkward middle ground niche.

I know. You still have to develop official Xbox One and Xbox Series emulators that have 100% compatibility. Not doable, and since extas1s has been way below a 50/50 recently I don't believe it.

I wonder if ~~r is talking about licensing because Microsoft would have to make a preeeetty big legal shenanigans to say that PCs are indeed Xbox's if they just allowed anyone to emulate the Xbox environment on pc and endorsed it

Sounds about what people expected. A pricey HW with Windows that is mostly there just as an Xbox branded option on the HW marker.

Certaily a good thing for me if it happens, but is it really good for MS? It seems like this would kill any xbox console unless the price to power ratio was vastly better than just building/buying a PC.

It's one part of my argument, yes. The other one is, simply, performance. I can see a 360 emulator working performance-wise, but this becomes way harder as you go up to One and Series. You require a lot more juice if you try to emulate a Series X.

Guess they gave up on fighting Steam with the Microsoft Store and will instead prevent any Steam OS takeover over Windows for PC gaming on a broader level, seems reasonable and even late that they're finally leveraging Windows.

So I'd be able to get PS exclusives on my new Xbox from Steam, and use Game Pass, and also have Steam on my Xbox as well for indies/other games, vs the PS6 with no Game Pass and no Steam, but with MS first party games?

    That's interesting

Anyway owning the box under the tv was always the aim, so I doubt they'd care much about gaming if they could do it. Much better to sell tv show deals.

They wouldn't pay anymore to Steam than they already do on PC. Presumably this isn't going to be taking a loss like consoles usually do so that won't be as big a deal.

    Basically, yeah.

I think the biggest part in all this is nailing down the "console user experience" which currently Windows 11 still do not offer.

If they will create a good new shell on boot instead of Desktop and mimic the current Xbox Dashboard experienceas much as possible it could really open a new market of devices. They could even open for other OEMs doing beefier, more premium or more economical variants of these new "consoles" as well.

It would depend on the limitations of it, and the implementation, however full console experience with being able to get access to cheap game keys for Steam and free giveaways that Epic always does is an attractive proposition.

Imo they probably take a middle ground and emulate a series s. The main thing it would be used for is establishing a pathways for bc games to live with your accounts on the Microsoft store

Licensing is the real devil in the details I assume the last gen and this gen games would have wording in it about "Xbox devices and platforms" but the 360 and og catalogs wouldn't which makes me go hmmm at the full bc libraries being emulatable on a pc with no issues

Sounds too good to be true, provided they can get a price and potency similar to the next Playstation, and if it has free online, it could really make me consider abandoning ps ecosystem.

For real. I don't see how some of the third parties that agreed to bring the games back on BC would like to suddenly be on PC. That, or how would disc-only BC games work, because those still exist and they'd definitely not work. And now that I write this, yeah, how would disc-based games work on this?

My prediction before the Series X was announced was pretty much exactly this, guess I was just off by a generation. For real though, I think this is the only way I'd be interested in a new Xbox console. With all their games being everywhere there isn't much a reason I'd need an xbox. But if its basically a consolized PC I could see that being potentially worth it assuming its not like Though even then... A gaming pc might not be too bad. Basically I'd rather pay a lot for a pc than a dedicated console.

[eXtas1s] Next Xbox(es) will be Windows based, will include Steam/EGS + full Xbox library emulation and BC. GP still strategic (new tiers/prices)
P40L0 Member Jun 12, 2018 9,588 Italy Here's the summary of latest eXtas1s' direct about verified rumors and leaks from his sources: Steam/Epic Integration into Microsoft Store A new app called "Steam DF Beta" has appeared in the Windows Microsoft Store, allowing users to install Steam directly from the official store. The Epic Games Store is already integrated in the same way. This doesn't mean current Xbox consoleswill natively run Steam, but that Windowswill offer an easier download/install experience. Future "Console-Like" Shell on Windows Microsoft is developing a compatibility layer or "shell" to give Windows a console-like interface, suitable for both PC gaming and next‑gen Xbox systems.Xbox Emulation on PC An Xbox emulator for Windowsis in development, allowing users to play their Xbox library on PC by emulating the console rather than running native PC ports of the games. Saves and achievements will remain separate between Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox and will not sync automatically. Backward Compatibility and "Pass‑Through" Titles There are no plans to add new backward‑compatible games beyond what's already available, but the emulator work will let the entire Xbox library run on PC.Evolution of Game Pass Game Passwill remain a strategic cornerstone and will not be discontinued. New tiers are coming: cloud‑only, ad‑supported, PC‑only, Ultimate, etc. A price restructuring is imminent, likely raising fees—especially for the PC tier.
This doesn't mean current Xbox consoles (Series X/S, One) will natively run Steam, but that Windows (and future Windows-based Xboxes) will offer an easier download/install experience. Future "Console-Like" Shell on Windows Microsoft is developing a compatibility layer or "shell" to give Windows a console-like interface (similar to Steam's Big Picture mode), suitable for both PC gaming and next‑gen Xbox systems.Xbox Emulation on PC An Xbox emulator for Windows (x64 architecture) is in development, allowing users to play their Xbox library on PC by emulating the console rather than running native PC ports of the games. Saves and achievements will remain separate between Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox and will not sync automatically. Backward Compatibility and "Pass‑Through" Titles There are no plans to add new backward‑compatible games beyond what's already available, but the emulator work will let the entire Xbox library run on PC.Evolution of Game Pass Game Pass (including PC Game Pass and Ultimate) will remain a strategic cornerstone and will not be discontinued. New tiers are coming: cloud‑only, ad‑supported, PC‑only, Ultimate, etc. A price restructuring is imminent, likely raising fees—especially for the PC tier. Handling Rumors and Q&A The creator explains their approach: freely discuss rumors ("fun speculation") but clearly flag when something isn't confirmed 100%. They answer questions on topics such as: Transferring Xbox libraries to new consoles ("Phil Spencer confirmed yes") Whether online emulation will require subscriptions (probably not, but unclear) Third‑party titles and new COD at the next showcase (expected to appear) Buying on Steam vs. Microsoft Store (personal preference for Steam) Apparently what I suspected 1 year ago is actually coming true. What do you think? UPDATE: Jez Corden mostly corroborated this  Last edited: Yesterday at 1:42 PM VIPER Member Nov 12, 2023 1,408 Interesting strategy. This is just a PC in a box. I think the biggest part in all this is nailing down the "console user experience" which currently Windows 11 still do not offer. If they will create a good new shell on boot instead of Desktop and mimic the current Xbox Dashboard experience (also for managing OS/Drivers/Game updates in a centralized way and in the background) as much as possible it could really open a new market of devices (with the portable Xbox directly rivalling Switch 2 and Deck and the bigger, more powerful variant rivaling PS6 or even being a more user friendly and compact alternative to build and put a monster PC under the TV). They could even open for other OEMs doing beefier, more premium or more economical variants of these new "consoles" as well.  OP OP P40L0 Member Jun 12, 2018 9,588 Italy brenobnfm said: I just hope any of the Xbox BC isn't cloud bullshit like PS3 on PS5, if that's the case better keep a Series X for these purposes. Looking back, there are a few mistakes I made while traveling internationally with my grandma.

In summer 2024, I traveled with my grandma, mom, and sister to Montreal.
I wish I'd thought more about my grandma's physical needs when planning the itinerary.
It would've been nice to have more downtime in our schedule, too.
Despite living 1,800 miles apart, my 81-year-old grandma and I have always been close.
We share a love for "Downton Abbey," cross-stitch, and strong coffee, and I couldn't imagine spending weeks in the summer anywhere but her sunny kitchen table in central Minnesota.Of course, I'd be naive to assume my time with her is unlimited.
That's one reason my grandma, mom, sister, and I decided to embark on a trip to Montreal together last summer.Although I'm grateful we were able to take this trip, it could have gone a lot smoother had I known these three things about traveling with an older relative.
The itinerary should have reflected everyone's physical needs, not just my own
I should've considered how long it would take my grandma to get to excursions like our afternoon tea.

I'm the most frequent traveler in my family, so I took on all the planning myself and approached the task the same way I do for solo travel: leaving no stone unturned.I thought my grandma would be well-prepared for the long days, given that she walks 3 miles a day and eats a far more balanced diet than I do.What I failed to consider, though, was how difficult it would be for her to walk on the uneven cobblestone streets.
On our first day in the city, we nearly missed an afternoon tea reservation since I didn't factor in the slower pace we'd have to take to accommodate my grandma's careful steps.I also didn't realize just how exhausting a full-day Three Pines tour would be.
Although fantastic — with stops at a monastery, local museum, and five-star resort for lunch — our visit to the villages that inspired the fictional location of my grandma's favorite mystery series was nine hours long.
My family and I went on a nine-hour tour of Three Pines.

As the day progressed, we took turns snoozing in the back seat of our tour guide's van.
Upon arriving back at the bed and breakfast, my grandma exclaimed how long of a day it was; and I didn't disagree.Similarly, I didn't consider my grandma's physical limitations when choosing restaurants.
Although they weren't lacking in ambiance — picture patios swallowed in bougainvillea and cool, brutalist interiors overlooking Lake Saint Louis — the dim lighting and small font sizes made it challenging for her to read the menu.My mom, sister, and I mitigated my grandma's vision issues by taking turns reading the menu aloud, line by line, but that got old fast.In retrospect, I wish I'd shown up equipped with solutions, such as finding the menu online so she could zoom in on my phone or reminding her to bring her readers, to improve everyone's dining experience.
A long trip means extended time away from routinesEveryone gets to a point on vacation when they're ready to return home, but I would argue that the feeling is stronger for older adults like my grandma, who travel once or twice a year and may be used to a strict daily routine.Although my grandma never expressed this feeling to me outright, I noticed as the days went on, she became less game for her granddaughters' plans. For example, on our last evening, my sister and I wanted to check out the shops lining Saint-Laurent Boulevard, but my grandma preferred to have takeout in the hotel. We compromised, and my sister and I walked to the boulevard to pick up dinner, but we ditched our shopping plan since we felt bad keeping my mom and grandma waiting.I wish we'd had more downtime together
One of my favorite memories from the trip was when we spontaneously visited a speakeasy.

    Emily Schlorf

Instead of jam-packing every day with new experiences, I wish I'd taken my foot off the gas as the trip progressed — for my grandma's sake as well as my own.As we reached days five and six of the trip, my excitement for the activities I planned dwindled, and I found myself wishing I hadn't planned them at all.Besides, the memories I cherish most from the trip weren't the museums or guided tours, they were the unplanned ones: a shared bottle of wine with our bed and breakfast hosts, a visit to an outdoor antique market, and a nightcap at a speakeasy.Despite the challenges, I'd love to travel with my grandma again
I would love to go on another trip with my grandma.

    Emily Schlorf

To anyone contemplating a multigenerational trip, I say do it, but be more considerate than I was.
Take time to plan the trip together, think of everyone's needs, and be content with slowing down.Strolling through the city hand-in-hand with my grandma, I learned that it's OK to leave some stones unturned, because the real joy comes from who you're turning them with.
